Actually it would probably be more accurate to say they protect the idea of breathing. Their actions can even take breathing away but they ignore that fact and hide it out of sight. Even if breathing is protected, life isn't guaranteed. Life needs joy, vitality, growth, happiness. A life of endless suffering is hardly any life at all.
